GREAT storytelling, film work, design and typography… and it’s for an educational program! Splendid. This is GOOD work. This is advertising that I don’t hate.
WOW. If anyone out there has a bicycle with low low low gears and is feeling adventurous, I would TOTALLY recommend this absolutely punishing/ breathtakingly scenic ride. Here’s a link to a write up about it on Tough Ascent.
After the evil brutal climb (15-22% grade) there is a verrrry fast descent with a lot of technical turns (but nothing unmanageable.) Once the descent levels out and the pace slows down, there’s a stop light that you can turn right or left at. We took a left turn following the signs pointing back to PCH which puts you on Malibu Canyon Road. This canyon is gorgeous, and at 9-10am the lighting was like something out of an Edgar Payne landscape painting. There is some high speed car traffic, which blows… But there’s also plenty of shoulder and it’s really nothing too worrisome. A few somewhat fast descents and some flats put you back at PCH right next to Pepperdine University. This ride has become one of my all time favorites.
From the base of Las Flores around the loop described above it’s probably 25 miles and over 2000 ft of elevation gain. The route that we took was from Santa monica, up PCH and then to Las flores, which adds another 20+- miles for the round trip… The extra 10+- on the way there gives you a nice warm up before the climb.
